THE PROCESS

Submit Application

Once you feel you have found your new family member fill out an application. We'll respond in 2-4 days. We receive many applications so please be patient.

2

Video Conversation

After reviewing your application, we'll schedule a video call to get to know you and review your application in-depth and explore if your needs and lifestyle will be a good match for the needs of our animals.

3

Meet & Greet/Trial Adoption

We require a meet and greet for dogs (if you have resident dogs they need to be there, as well as all members of your household). It is up to the potential adopter if they would like to meet a cat/kitten beforehand or if they would like to move forward with a trial adoption.

1

Please keep in mind:

  • Kittens do best when they have a friend. Paws and Claws adopts out kittens in pairs and solo kittens ONLY to homes with another cat/kitten.

  • We are not able to hold animals for an extended period of time. Please don't apply until you are ready or close to prepared to bring your new addition home (within a week of the application being submitted).

  • We prioritize adopters in Illinois, but may accept applicants who are just over the boarder in the following states, WI and IN.

  • Both references must NOT be related to you.

  • You MUST put down your current or past veterinarian if you have/had pets.

  • Be open-minded! The cat whose photo you fell in love with may not be the cat who is the best fit for your home and lifestyle.

  • We ask that you do not choose cats/dogs you are interested in based on looks. Please remember that you will be adopting them because you feel that their personality fits with your home environment. We will not review applications where adopters are applying for an animal because they like their color etc.

  • One of the things that is very important to us is keeping in touch with our adopters. We want to see photos, hear stories and maybe even receive a holiday card?! We like to say once a P&C animal always a P&C animal. Please keep in touch. We will do check-ins in the first few months post-adoption but ask that you stay in touch beyond that. Our fosters love receiving adoption updates and photos and we love hearing from you. It may not be every organization's requirement but it is one of ours.

What will set your application apart…

  • When filling out our application please be as detailed as possible and answer the question being asked. We receive many applications with missing info (unit number, zip code, reference relationship, employment dates) and even more that have very short answers.

  • And last, but not least have you followed the information stated above? We try to be as clear as possible to avoid confusion and be upfront about what we look for on an application.
